Twenty-one thousand people in a community without a town centre of its own makes for a neighbourly celebration culture rather than a formal one: birthdays, graduations, showers and retirement parties in the garden with borrowed chairs. Lot sizes vary a lot here, so a manufactured-home yard and a ranch parcel are two very different parties, and the guest list often gets set by what fits rather than who you would like there. Nobody is booking a ballroom, so the money that would have gone on a venue goes on food, and the invitation is expected to look good without looking expensive.

I send the story-sized and text-message files first, because that is the format that gets forwarded around thirty people in an afternoon without anyone chasing it. There is one small local wrinkle worth planning for: your postcode is shared with the town next door, so I write the location line the way your guests say it rather than the way the post prefers it.
When people celebrate here
It runs hot and rural-feeling out here, hotter than anywhere with a sea breeze reaching it, and a midsummer afternoon in the garden is a short-lived idea. Most hosts start at five or six from June through September and use the full day in spring and autumn instead. Rain is not what moves a date in Winter Gardens, heat is, and the paper I make for a July evening party looks different from the paper for a March lunch.

Everything we do goes out by text. Do I need anything other than the phone file?
Usually not. The text-message and story-sized files cover a thirty-person garden party completely, and they are the versions people actually open. I would only add the print-ready PDF if there is someone on the list who does not use a group chat. That way you have one file to forward and one to print, and no second design job.
Our address says the next town over. What location do I put on the invitation?
Put the name your guests use, because the invitation is for people, not for the post. I keep the postal address off the face of the card entirely and give the street and the turning your guests need instead. Anyone driving in from Santee or Lakeside is ten minutes out and needs a landmark, not a full address. It reads better and it gets people to the right driveway.
