Bridal shower invitations

The tricky one, because it has to relate to the wedding stationery without pretending to be it.

A sage-green ceramic vase with an olive branch beside a stack of cards

A bridal shower invitation sits in an awkward spot. The wedding usually already has a look, chosen by the couple, and the shower is being thrown by somebody else entirely, often the maid of honour or the mother of the bride. Copy the wedding stationery exactly and it feels like a knock-off. Ignore it completely and the two events feel disconnected.

What works is taking one element forward. Usually the palette, sometimes the typeface, occasionally a motif. The shower invitation is then clearly related to the wedding without being a smaller version of it, and it gets to be lighter and more playful, which suits the event.

The practical complication is that the host is not the bride, so I am often working with somebody who has the wedding save-the-date on their phone and is guessing at the rest. Send me a photo of it and I can pull the palette accurately.

Design notes

What changes for this one

Take one element from the wedding stationery and let everything else be new. Registry and any theme, recipe cards, garden party, book instead of a card, goes on a details card so the invitation itself stays clean.

Timing

When to send

Four to six weeks, and coordinate with whoever is running the wedding timeline so it does not land in the same week as the invitations themselves.

Palette

Colours that work

Garden-leaning. Soft green, warm white, one accent pulled from the wedding palette.

Questions people ask about bridal shower invitations

Should it match the wedding invitations?

Relate to them, do not copy them. Take the palette or the typeface forward and let the rest be its own thing. A shower is a lighter event than a wedding and the invitation is allowed to be lighter too.

I am the maid of honour and I do not have the wedding files.

Completely normal. Send me a screenshot or a photo of the save the date, even a bad one, and I can pull the colours and identify the typeface closely enough. You do not need to ask the bride and spoil the surprise.

What about a themed shower?

Recipe swaps, stock-the-bar, lingerie showers and garden parties all need an extra instruction, and that belongs on a details card rather than the main invitation. Otherwise the theme starts competing with the date.
