We are planning a year ahead. When does the invitation actually need designing?
Earlier than the invitation itself, because the design decides what the save-the-date looks like. I would settle the look six to nine months out, send a save-the-date once the venue is fixed, and print the invitation about eight weeks before. A First Look concept at $45 is a cheap way to lock the direction while the rest of the year sorts itself out. The full suite at $545 then follows the same design without rework.
Some of our guests are travelling in and crossing the border. What should the card say?
Give the full address written out and the start time in plain figures, rather than a link that assumes a working phone. I would also add a line saying when the meal is served, so anyone with an unpredictable journey knows what they can afford to miss. For a day this long, that single line prevents most of the anxious messages. It is the most useful sentence on the whole card for a travelling guest.
