La Jolla holds the most formal celebrations in the county outside Coronado, with cove and bluff-side events, hotel receptions and a real appetite for printed stationery. This is the one part of San Diego where a full suite with a matching menu and place cards is normal rather than exceptional.

Coastal parties run on the weather and the light. Late-afternoon events that carry into golden hour are the norm, and the palettes that work here are the ones that hold up against bright sun and sand-coloured ground rather than fighting it.
