The guest list comes off a class list or a team roster rather than out of an extended family, so it is large, local and almost identical year to year. At 58 to 82°F, roughly ten degrees warmer than the coast in summer and under ten inches of rain a year, this is comfortable outdoor country for most of the calendar and an outdoor date is a safe bet. The constraint is the afternoon. An inland valley garden in July or August is hot enough by two o'clock that everyone crowds into whatever shade exists, so a late-afternoon start reads far better than a midday one. Winter evenings drop off quickly once the sun goes, which is worth a line on the card if the party runs past six. I would rather build that timing advice into the invitation than leave forty families guessing.
