Invitation design in Boulevard

Boulevard is home to roughly three hundred people spread across large parcels at about 3,000 feet, so a guest list here is measured in families rather than in tables. Celebrating is a private, outdoor, daylight affair, and the ridge wind decides more about your paper than any style choice does.

Celebrating in the backcountry

With a population that small, most celebrations happen on someone's own land, and much the same handful of neighbours turns up for all of them. Parties skew practical and unfussy in a community that runs on self-sufficiency and lending each other a hand, so the paper should feel warm rather than formal. Guests who are not local drive in along the I-8 corridor, and they tend to make a day of it rather than turning up for an hour.

Getting paper there

The practical side

Services are minimal out here, so I would not plan on printing, addressing or posting anything locally. I send print-ready PDFs you can take to a printer on your next trip down the hill, plus a text-message file that reaches the whole list the same afternoon. For a community this size, texting the invitation is often the entire distribution plan, and nobody reads it as casual.

Seasons

When people celebrate here

The daily swing is the thing to plan around, because 45 to 90°F means a warm afternoon turns cold within an hour of sunset. Freeze nights are common through winter, so outdoor celebrating realistically runs spring to autumn and finishes before dark. Only 12 to 15 inches of rain fall in a year, so weather rarely cancels anything, but the wind that turns the ridge turbines will take flat menus and place cards straight off a table.

Frequently asked questions

The wind out here ruins anything loose. What paper actually holds up outdoors in Boulevard?

Anything unweighted will move, so I keep outdoor pieces to items that lie heavy or stand in something. Menus on thick stock, place cards folded as tents rather than laid flat, and one larger sign instead of a dozen small ones all survive better. Ask your printer for the heaviest card their machine takes, since it costs little and solves most of the problem. The invitation itself travels by phone anyway, so the printed run can be small and built for the table.

Most of my guests are driving in from further west. How much detail should the invitation carry?

More than a city invitation would, because a wrong turn out here costs half an hour. I put the arrival window, the nearest highway exit and a line about the last sensible place to fill up before the property. Add a note asking people to save the details before they set off, since there is nowhere convenient to stop and check along the way. That one line prevents most of the calls you would otherwise field on the day.

Where can I print invitations for my Boulevard event?

You can use any printer you like for your Boulevard invitations. You'll pay the printer directly, so there's no markup from me. I don't print, mail, ship or address anything myself. Once the design is finished, you choose how many copies to order. You own the file and can reprint it whenever you need more.
