Book club invitations

I make custom book club invitations, personalised from an existing design for $65 or designed from scratch, then deliver everything as digital files.

This is the only invitation in the studio that gets sent twelve times a year, which makes it a template problem rather than a one-off.

A low table with a stack of hardback books face down, two cups of tea and a blank card

A book club is recurring, so paying for a single card makes little sense. What works is one layout with three fields that change: the book, the date, and whose house it is. Designed once, it goes out every month looking like it belongs to your group, and the sending takes two minutes rather than an evening of fighting with a free app that has crammed a logo into the corner.

The content that actually drives attendance is the reading expectation, and most clubs never write it down. Members quietly stop coming because they are eighty pages short and assume they will be exposed. One plain line fixes it. Either "come whether or not you have finished" or "we will discuss the whole book, spoilers included" is fine, but the group has to pick one and the invitation is where it gets said.

The rest is food and shape. Say if it is a full dinner or wine and something to pick at, say if the host is providing everything or people bring a plate, and say roughly when discussion starts, because a club that talks about the book at ten past nine and a club that talks about it at half nine are different clubs. Getting that on the card is what keeps a group going past its first six months.

Design notes

What changes for this one

Built as a reusable frame. The title of the book sits where a party name would normally go, treated as the headline, with the author beneath it, and there is a fixed slot for the pages or chapters under discussion. I can supply it as a set of monthly files, or one editable layout you refill yourself.

Timing

When to send

Send the next one at the end of the current meeting, or within a day of it, while everyone still has the book in hand and can order it. Three to four weeks of reading time is the usual, and a short reminder a week out with the page count does more good than a reminder the day before.

Palette

Colours that work

Warm paper, ink, and one accent that can shift with the book if you want it to. Linen and oxblood, or bone and deep green, both look like a small press rather than a group chat.

Questions people ask about book club invitations

Can we reuse the same design every month?

That is what it is designed for. You get a layout with the book, date, host and page range as changeable fields, so each month is a swap rather than a new commission.

Do you update it for us each month, or do we?

Either. Some clubs send me the next book and get a fresh file back, others take an editable version and do it themselves. The second costs less over a year and suits a group with someone confident in Canva.

Should the invitation say whether you have to finish the book?

Yes, and it is the most useful line on the card. Attendance drops when people are unsure whether being behind is a problem. Saying it plainly either way removes the reason to skip a month.

What if the book is heavy going or the subject is difficult?

A short note about the content is worth adding, phrased as information rather than warning. Members appreciate knowing before they start, particularly in clubs that read a lot of memoir.
