Anniversary party invitations

For a fortieth, a fiftieth or a sixtieth, and almost always organised by the couple's children.

Warm light flooding across a pale wooden table holding an invitation suite

Milestone anniversary parties are family projects. The couple being celebrated are usually not the ones planning it, and the guest list spans three or four generations, from people who were at the original wedding to great-grandchildren.

The single best design device here is the original wedding photograph. Set well, it does more emotional work than any illustration could, and it gives the whole invitation a reason to exist beyond announcing a date. Most families have one, often in poor condition, and I can work with a phone photo of a print.

The practical note is gifts. At a fiftieth anniversary nobody needs anything, and most families want to say so. A short line handles it, ideally pointing at something else, a memory, a photograph, or a donation, so guests who want to bring something have somewhere to put that instinct.

Design notes

What changes for this one

The original wedding photograph, if one exists, carries the card. A "no gifts" line is almost always wanted and works better when it redirects rather than just declines.

Timing

When to send

Six to eight weeks. The guest list skews older and travels, and people need to arrange it properly.

Palette

Colours that work

Warm and classic. Bone, gold, deep green. Something that sits comfortably beside a photograph from decades ago.

Questions people ask about anniversary invitations

The old wedding photo is damaged. Can you still use it?

Usually yes. Send me a clear phone photo of the print in good light and I can handle mild fading, colour shifts and light creasing. What I cannot rescue is a badly torn or very blurred original, and I will tell you honestly rather than deliver something disappointing.

How do we say no gifts?

Redirect rather than decline. "No gifts please, but we would love a memory or a photograph for the album" gives guests somewhere to put the impulse, and you end up with something worth keeping.

Can you combine the old photo and a recent one?

Yes, and it is a lovely thing to do. Then and now, side by side, is the most emotionally effective anniversary invitation I make.
