Gender reveal invitation wording
The one detail every guest wants settled before they arrive: do the parents already know?
There are three versions of this party and they feel completely different. The parents know and are telling everyone. The parents do not know and are finding out with the room. Or nobody knows, including whoever is running the reveal, because it is sealed in an envelope from the scan. Guests behave differently at each, and the invitation should say which one they are walking into.
The reveal mechanism is worth naming too, in one short line. A cake cut, balloons, a piñata, coloured powder. It sets expectations, it tells people whether to have a phone ready, and for anything outdoors it tells guests to dress for standing on grass.
A word on safety, because it belongs on the invitation more than on any other card in this studio. Powder, smoke and anything involving a device have caused real harm at these parties, including wildfires. If the reveal is outdoors, saying what it is and that it is being done safely is not a mood-killer, it is the responsible line. Anything that burns has no place at a party in San Diego County in fire season.
Gender reveal invitation wording, written out
Boy or girl? We do not know either Come and find out with us Sunday, the tenth of May, at two 1424 Willow Court, Poway Wear pink or blue — pick a side
The second line is the whole invitation. It changes the party from an announcement into a shared moment, and guests behave accordingly.
We know. You do not. Come and find out Sunday, the tenth of May, at two 1424 Willow Court, Poway
Short and slightly smug, which is the right register. Being upfront that the parents know stops guests watching their faces all afternoon.
Team Pink or Team Blue Wear your guess Cast your vote at the door Sunday the tenth, two until four
The team format is what makes these parties fun, and it needs to be on the invitation because guests have to dress for it before they arrive.
Outdoors, so dress for grass Balloons and confetti only — nothing that burns
Worth printing on any outdoor reveal. It reassures the guests who have read the news stories, and it quietly rules out the ideas that cause them.
The mistakes worth avoiding
- Not saying whether the parents already know, which every guest wonders about.
- Asking guests to wear a colour without saying so early enough for them to find one.
- Planning anything involving fire, smoke or a device outdoors, particularly in fire season.
- Leaving out the reveal time at a party where the reveal is the entire point.
- Running it as a drop-in. A reveal is a single moment and everybody has to be there for it.
Questions people ask
Should we say whether we already know?
Yes. It is the first thing every guest wonders, and it changes how the room behaves. Either answer is fine; saying nothing is what causes the whispering.
What time should the reveal happen?
Put it on the invitation and make it about thirty to forty-five minutes after the start. Long enough for stragglers, short enough that nobody is waiting around.
Is a gender reveal a substitute for a baby shower?
No, and guests should not be expected to bring gifts to both. If you are doing both, keep the reveal short and gift-free and say so.
What about the safety warnings we have all seen?
They are real. Every serious incident involved fire, smoke devices or something explosive. Balloons, confetti, powder-free cake cuts and a piñata do the job with none of the risk.
