Rainbow birthday invitations

I make custom rainbow birthday invitations, personalised from an existing design for $65 or designed from scratch, then deliver everything as digital files.

Rainbow is the theme most likely to be done badly, because almost everyone reaches for the same six primary colours straight out of the party aisle.

Paper swatches in a considered muted spectrum from rust through sage to dusty blue

The default rainbow is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple at full saturation, and it looks like a packet of balloons because that is where it came from. A rainbow is just an ordered spectrum, and the order is the only rule. Choose the six by hand, in muted or dusty or deep tones, and you get something that still reads instantly as a rainbow while looking designed. Rust, marigold, ochre, olive, teal, plum is a rainbow. So is a set of six chalky pastels. The eye reads the sequence, not the brightness.

That matters more here than on most themes because rainbow works across an unusually wide age range. A first birthday, a seven-year-old, a fortieth, a Pride-adjacent gathering, a party where the guest of honour just likes colour. Very few themes stretch like that, and the reason they can is that the palette carries all the meaning. Pick the wrong six and it reads as a toddler party regardless of whose birthday it is.

It also covers the boho version people search for separately, because a boho birthday palette is a rainbow with the saturation pulled down and warm earth tones dominating. Same structure, different six. If you send me a photo of the balloon garland or the cake you have in mind, I will pull the six colours from it so the invitation and the table agree.

Design notes

What changes for this one

The spectrum usually runs as an arc, a stripe block, or six type colours across the wording, and only one of those should be doing the work. Sequence matters more than the individual colours, so the order never gets rearranged for balance. The text sits on a plain warm ground, never on top of the spectrum, because six colours behind body copy is unreadable at any size.

Timing

When to send

Three to four weeks out for a children's party, four to six for an adult one. If a balloon installer or a bakery is matching the palette, they need the six colours as soon as the invitation is finalised, so this design tends to happen earlier than the send date suggests.

Palette

Colours that work

Six chosen by hand in one register. Muted earth: rust, marigold, ochre, olive, teal, plum. Or chalky pastels. Or deep jewel tones. Never the six straight from a crayon box.

Questions people ask about rainbow birthday invitations

How do you keep a rainbow from looking like a toddler party?

Pull the saturation down and keep all six colours in the same register. A rainbow of dusty tones or deep jewel tones reads as designed. A rainbow of full-brightness primaries reads as a party aisle, whatever the age of the guest of honour.

Can you match the invitation to my balloon garland?

Yes, and it is the most useful thing you can send me. A photo of the garland or the cake gives me the six exact colours, and then the paper and the table look like one decision instead of two.

Does rainbow work for an adult birthday?

It works better than most themes do. Keep the spectrum and change the tones: six deep or muted colours with grown-up type is a rainbow invitation nobody would call childish.

Is this the same as a boho birthday invitation?

Close enough that one design covers both. Boho is a rainbow with the brightness taken out and the warm earth end weighted heavier. Say which way you want it leaning and I will set the six accordingly.
