Movie night invitations

I make custom movie night invitations, personalised from an existing design for $65 or designed from scratch, then deliver everything as digital files.

An outdoor movie night and an indoor one share a name and almost nothing else, and the invitation has to pick a side.

A backyard at dusk with a blank projection sheet strung between trees and blankets on the grass

Outdoors, the start time is not yours to choose. A projector needs real darkness, so the film starts when the sun has gone down, and in June that can be past nine. The honest way to write it is to give an arrival time and then say the film starts at dusk, roughly whenever that is. Guests with young children can then work out whether it is possible at all, rather than turning up to a bright garden and a screen nobody can see.

The rest of the outdoor brief is comfort and weather. People need to know whether to bring a blanket, a low chair or nothing, because a garden with no seating and twenty guests is a bad evening. It gets cold faster than anybody expects once the sun is down, and a line saying bring something warm is the difference between people staying for the credits and leaving at the halfway point. A rain plan belongs on the card too, with the answer, not just the possibility.

Indoors is a simpler card with one different question: who is it for. A children's movie night is a drop-off with a pick-up time and a pile of cushions. An adults' one is closer to a dinner that happens to have a film in it, and those guests want to know whether there is a meal, whether talking through it is acceptable, and roughly when they are getting home. Say which film, in either case. It is the thing everyone wants to know and the reason half of them say yes.

Design notes

What changes for this one

The start-time line is the design problem. For outdoor nights the arrival time and the dusk start need to read as two separate pieces of information, not one time with a caveat. What to bring gets its own short block. Film titles are set as the type they are, never as a copied studio logo or poster art, which is somebody else's work.

Timing

When to send

Two weeks for an indoor night. Three for outdoors, since guests are bringing chairs and blankets and checking the forecast, and you may need to move it.

Palette

Colours that work

Ink blue and warm cream for outdoors, which is what the sky does at dusk. Indoors can go warmer, a lamp-lit amber against charcoal. Both stay legible on a phone in the dark, which is where this one gets read.

Questions people ask about movie night invitations

What time do we put for an outdoor screening?

Give an arrival time and say the film starts at dusk. You cannot start a projector before dark, and pretending you have a fixed start time just means people sit in a bright garden waiting.

Do we tell people what to bring?

Yes, in a short block of its own. Blanket, low chair, something warm. It gets colder than anyone expects after sunset, and unseated guests leave early.

How do we word a rain plan?

Give the answer rather than the possibility. Say it moves indoors, or say it moves to the following Saturday, and say where the update will come from. A maybe on the card produces a dozen texts on the day.

Can you put the film poster on it?

No. Posters and studio artwork are owned and I will not reproduce them. The title set in the right type, plus a palette taken from the film, gets you the same recognition without the problem.
