Construction birthday invitations
I make custom construction birthday invitations, personalised from an existing design for $65 or designed from scratch, then deliver everything as digital files.
This is a dressing-up party more often than not, and the invitation is the only place anyone is going to find that out.
$65
Your details set by hand, usually back the same day. $145 to rebuild it in your own colours.
Construction parties usually come with kit. Hard hats and high-vis vests for every guest, sometimes handed out at the door, sometimes expected from home. That is a decision the host has already made and almost never writes down. If you are providing the hats, say so, because otherwise half the parents buy them. If you want children to arrive already dressed, say that instead, and say it plainly enough that nobody misses it. A child who turns up in a party shirt at a room full of tiny site workers has a rough hour.
The second thing is dirt. These parties are usually outside and usually involve a dig pit, a sandpit, gravel, water or all four, which is exactly what makes them good. It also means clothes come home ruined unless parents were warned. One line asking for old clothes and shoes that can be hosed off does the job, and it is worth more on this invitation than any decorative element on it.
The theme itself has a trap. Most construction party goods are built around a small number of licensed cartoon vehicles, and once you have those on the invitation the whole party has to match them or it looks accidental. Real machines are better anyway: an excavator drawn properly, a cone, a caution stripe, a plan-drawing grid. Children who love diggers love actual diggers, and the design then holds together across the invitation, the signs and the cake table without paying for a licence.
What changes for this one
The dress-code line gets the same weight as the time, because it is the thing that goes wrong. Caution stripes, a hand-drawn excavator, a blueprint grid, bold type with a site-notice feel. Original illustration only, no licensed cartoon vehicles. If the party is outdoors, the rain answer goes on the card rather than being left open.
When to send
Three to four weeks. If parents are supplying hard hats or high-vis, make it four, because that is a thing they have to go and buy and a week is not enough notice.
Colours that work
Safety yellow and charcoal with a warm off-white, which is the real language of a building site and reads instantly to a three-year-old. Keep the yellow slightly muted so it does not fight the type.
Questions people ask about construction birthday invitations
Do we say hard hats are expected?
Always, one way or the other. Either you are handing them out at the door or you want children to arrive in them. Leaving it unsaid means a mixed room and one child who feels wrong.
How do we warn parents about the mess?
A single line asking for old clothes and shoes that can be hosed off. A dig pit is the best part of the party and the reason a good outfit gets destroyed.
Can you use the cartoon diggers from the shop sets?
No, those are licensed characters and I will not reproduce them. A properly drawn excavator and a caution stripe read as a building site to a small child and look better on the wall.
Can you match signs and labels to it?
Yes. Party printables carry the same stripes and type onto site notices, a name badge for each little worker, favour tags and table cards.
